Morning walk: 1C/34F, hazy clouds obscuring full moon, Gusta restless and pulling harder than usual for no apparent reason – fresh air in our nostrils, traffic building . .
I watched for it, now this morning arrived - here it is, birth-day, yours, today’s your day; substitute any date, 1/365th of the world’s population celebrates every day
Funny, birthdays, ALL of them, matter until we are 10; then 16, 18, 21, 25 are so important, but after that, not so much, but ones ending in zero grab our attention. Whether seen as milestones, or millstones, they indicate another decade gone, a new one unfolding. There is a time to say things, time to do things and time to shut up; I get these wrong, often, but I try to do some things right. Sometimes it’s magnitude, or inappropriate words, sometimes its lack of something but mostly its about gratitude and timing.
Life is not fair to any of us; but we exercise our autonomy, we do things for their own sake – things that matter. Our purpose is most often a narrow focus, on simple tasks. The rules are unclear, solutions not obvious - but there have been times, I’ll remember always – when someone taught me something I would never have known if it were not for them. Some people stay in our lives, others come and go – and sometimes someone leaves, moves on. Still, a thank you for these learning experiences is in order and it seems appropriate to send a birthday card.
‘Last week the candle factory burned down. Everyone just stood around and sang Happy Birthday.’ – Stephen Wright
For men, we get older, but women - they ripen; like ripened red fruit in the fall, women and butterflies spend their younger days working hard, and in the autumn of their lives they ripen, mature and show off their colors. To all the women and all the butterflies celebrating today, may you have a full day and another wonderful year, may you have a twinkle in your eye and may there be good reason for that twinkle.

WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE
There is nothing wrong, I think
with wanting that twinkling,
that comes from thinking
about finding what we want.
When we want a twinkling
in the eye, that is returned
by the object of our affection,
pointed in our direction.
When moon is very full and
life gets weird, make no sense;
there are stars twinkling, and
then everything is irresistible.
