Morning walk: 0C/32F, Saturday morning things are done, workout done, papers read – then we walked, wet Gusta the foot-rest dog at my feet; sunny skies, paved paths to the lagoon are a slurry of melt/ice, wet and dry; fresh air and dog walkers surrounded us, a lovely day here, though it might be a very tough day in paradise.
Waves come in many forms; brainwaves, shockwaves, waves of emotion and waves of water. While much of today’s thinking and concern is about waves of water, I’m impacted more by some brainwaves – some of which will have long lasting impact for me. I’ve spent much time lately, in a futile way, wrestling with decisions around things, issues and people where a decision is not required. And, I don’t think one is called for.
There are many things I don’t know – so many things I do; sorting out is challenging, just as wondering whether sorting out is the thing to do. Are decisions required for everything, or is it just important to move life forward with big decisions?
“Cowardice asks the question, ‘Is it safe?’ Expediency asks the question, ‘Is it politic?’ But conscience asks the question, ‘Is it right?’ .. And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but because conscience tells one it is right.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
What is right? What is the right thing to do? Posing questions to ourselves, to myself, is an exercise that we/I need a break from sometimes. Figuring everything out is not possible, not necessary, not for today . . . and often not required. If we force ourselves into making a decision, we will get a result. The question then, is not whether it is the right result, but rather whether or not it is the right time for asking the question, forcing the question, forcing the debate, forcing the issue, forcing our hand (or someone else’s) - as if some quest to make decisions necessarily makes life better, clearer or more purposeful. Today, I would argue it does not.
I am convinced – the clarity of my view right now – is that the best thing I can do is focus on things I need to take care of, people I care about and the joy of the day. This is the right time for many things, but not the right time for forcing decisions on a set of facts or feelings, it is a time for living; a time for not changing because change, because cause and effect are going to create plenty of change for everyone to deal with.
There is today, something unsettling and reassuring too; as I write this there is a tsunami racing across the Pacific Ocean; it will carry waves of undetermined power that will crash into those beloved islands, that will affect my paradise and – more significantly – affect the lives of so many people; most are strangers to me, some are friends, some are readers of this column and some are special people I’ve come to know and know about - and finally, most importantly, there is a lovely woman (FO) who is very important to me. I’ve talked to
My thoughts are far from

February 25 – COMMIT US TO A CHOICE - Dear LAR, I appreciate so very much your words of comfort and reflection. I have read your comments often over the last months and always enjoy your generous and thoughtful reflections. These words were extra special as they were personal and poignant to me. Thank you, FO,
February 25 – COMMIT US TO A CHOICE - I really like this! – ‘To be safe, clear - stay between life’s ditches – just go down middle of road, slowly. It must be easy, many people doing it. But, there is so much more value to venture, to adventure, to risk love and chance, to not thinking ‘outside the box’ but asking ‘why a box?’; Thank you for writing the quote (from your Feb. 16, 2010 post), DM, ?
