Morning walk: -13C/8F, overcast and gloomy looking - it appears we are heading back to the chiller for a few days (a good weekend for couch-potato Olympics); Gusta, oblivious to time or urgency just wanted to wander and inspect pedestrians, as if she had some vague idea they would be friendly …. which they were.
It worked, but why? We did it, but how did we really do it? If we could turn back clocks, to do it again, what would be same, what would change completely; what would matter, what wouldn’t? Was it the plan or the planners, the decision makers or the worker-bees, that made it a success, and what would have made it better simply by not being done at all? Success, I suppose, is as easy to dissect as failure – not easy; the issues, elements and facts seem far less important than harnessing people (or not), giving(or not) life to their ideas, commitment(or not) of some people and the working(or not) of all these moving parts.
Good ideas matter. But what good is an idea if we never do anything with it. I’ve had so many of those; they’ve found their way to old files, trash bins or just leaked away before being acted on. At the time, it always seems, the idea that doesn’t have fuel poured on it feels lost, lonely and unworthy - idea that only rolls around in our own head rarely goes anywhere – and the worst feeling, is when ideas get trashed, bashed or insulted the first time we say it out loud. Double that if the person putting the idea down is someone who is supposed to be on your side (ie: spouse, lover, friend, colleague), someone who should be cheerleader.
Maybe it’s easier to let an idea be shot down by a stranger, in a group, when there is a whirl of ideas in the room, the objective being to let the best ones rise, the poorer ones swirling nearer the floor drain. We enter the room, a collection of people each with a vague idea. We come out with a consensus. What makes a recipe work (or not work)?
Memories matter, but how effective/selective is it as a tool to help us? Some of my best memories are not from yesterday, but weeks ago, years ago, decades ago – but how accurate are they, how clear are they? Looking back, I wonder if the accuracy of the memory is as important as the fondness for the ideas; and I suppose the bad memories too, stick with us most if they were really bad as opposed to just mildly irritating.
Charles F. Kettering said: ‘If you want to kill any idea in the world, get a committee working on it.’ …. this rings true I believe, for bad ideas and dysfunctional committees; a good place to send the things we don’t want to happen? If, on the other hand, we want something done, need something done – something that is too big for one person to handle – don’t we need a committee? I’ve been pondering this dichotomy a while, and reflecting on some recent memories; and on ‘how it was we did what we did’ on a committee that really worked. Picasso’s words ring true; he said: ‘You have to have an idea of what you are going to do, but it should be a vague idea.’
First quart of coffee, coursing its way through me; I’m heading off to a breakfast meeting – a debrief on a recent Toastmasters event with the committee I led; a chance to eat some breakfast, laugh a little, reflect on a process/events while they are still fresh in our memories, time to dissect which were the good ideas worth repeating and to grip what it was we learned. Mostly, I learned so much about some people (far more than I learned about process) and their strengths by watching them in action. I wonder what they learned about me . . .
